Sexual harassment as a “sad reality” in the gastronomy

11.04.2024

From November 2023 to January 2024, employees and employers in the Viennese gastronomy were asked in an online survey about their experiences of sexual harassment in the workplace . The results of this survey were analysed by L&R Social Research and presented in a report.

Sexual harassment as a “sad reality”

It emerged that 72% of employees have experienced or witnessed sexual harassment in the workplace. At 79%, women are affected significantly more often than men at 54% and they also reported more incidents of sexual harassment. In addition, it is mainly younger employees, bartenders, waiters and temporary staff who have experienced such incidents at work.

The most common types of harassment reported were sexist remarks, lewd jokes and/or whistling, unwanted physical contact or physical proximity, staring at breasts, cleavage or buttocks and/or invitations with clear intent. Physical assaults were also reported (28% share).
