Sexual Harassment as a “Sad Reality” in the Restaurant Industry

11.04.2024

From November 2023 to January 2024, employees and employers in the Viennese restaurant industry were asked in an online survey about their experience of sexual harassment in the workplace. The results of this survey were analysed and published in a report by L&R Social Research.

Sexual Harassment is the “Sad Reality”

It emerged that 72% of employees have experienced or witnessed sexual harassment in the workplace. At 79% frequency, women are affected significantly more often than men (at 54%) and women also reported more diverse kinds of sexual harassment. In addition, it is mainly younger employees, bartenders, waiters and temporary staff who have experienced harassment in the workplace.

The most common types of harassment reported were sexist remarks, lewd jokes and/or whistling, unwanted physical contact or physical proximity, staring at breasts, cleavage or buttocks and/or uninvited invitations with clear sexual intent. Physical assaults were also reported (at 28%).
