Employment and personal circumstances of film-makers in Austria

The “Verwertungsgesellschaft der Filmschaffenden” (VdFS) commissioned the institut L&R Social Research to conduct a study on the working and living conditions of film-makers in Austria. This study was carried out in cooperation with the umbrella organisation of Austrian film people and its member associations.

Following on from the general study by the former Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture (BMUKK) on the social situation of artists conducted in 2008, this study focused specifically on Austrian filmmaking and looks at various dimensions of the social life and work of film-makers.

The group of film-makers includes a wide variety of professional fields such as directors, cameramen, actors, scriptwriters and costume designers. The core of the investigation is the analysis of the socio-economic background (gender, age, household constellations, education), the work situation (working hours, forms of employment, other activities, burdens), the social security (unemployment, illness, accident and pension) as well as the income situation of film-makers.
