Apprenticeship training in Austria: Competences at Risk

The paradox of declining entry-level skills among apprentices and Austrian success at vocational skills competitions was discussed on 14 April 2026 at the fourth regular meeting on vocational training held at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research. In a discussion involving ibw, IHS, L&R, öibf and WIFO, the presentations examined dropout rates in dual vocational training, gender disparities in STEM subjects, the development of young people’s skills and proven knowledge transfer strategies. On behalf of L&R Social Research, Nadja Bergmann provided insights into the training conditions for young women in technical apprenticeships and the corresponding working conditions following completion of their training.
