Artificial intelligence and gender differences in Austria

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be a subject of multi-faceted debate, particularly from a gender perspective. The key questions include whether, how, by whom and for what purpose artificial intelligence is developed and used, how gender-specific factors and life circumstances are taken into account, which stereotypes are reproduced or reinforced, and what developments can be expected in terms of economic, social and labour market policy.

Against this background, the Austrian initiative ‘She goes AI’ aims to strengthen digital skills and facilitate access, entry and transition for women into the field of AI. In addition to promoting basic skills among the population as a whole, both women and men, the aim is to increase the number of female AI experts and improve the conditions for women in relevant training and development fields. To assess the current situation, the short-term project ‘Artificial Intelligence and Gender Differences in Austria’ was carried out in February 2026 on behalf of the Office for Digital Skills. This involved compiling and contextualising existing figures, data and facts relating to gender differences in AI skills, AI training and AI professions, with a focus on the situation in Austria.

The project was carried out in cooperation with Andrea Leitner from the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS).
